Q&A: I’m having a luau party, what kind of food should I have?

Question by mybubblesrblue: I’m having a luau party, what kind of food should I have?
My birthday party is luau themed and I’m not sure what kind of food to have. It’s not going to be like a dinner, but more of finger food. I know there’s a lot of good hawaiian food but I dont want to make something that will get cold or ill have to make during the party. so i just need some finger foods, i will have a fruit platter and prolly fruit punch. what else??

Is it lame to have a sweet 16 luau party, in your backyard, without a pool?

Question by : Is it lame to have a sweet 16 luau party, in your backyard, without a pool?
I am looking for a cheaper alternative for throwing a big party. I want it to be fun &memorable but at the same time I don’t want to bankrupt my parents in the process:) My party would probably be the beginning of September so, the weather could be rainy, and I would like there to be about 60 people.

I was thinking it could be an inside/outside party with lots of food and games. I do not have a pool, which kind of makes me think a luau party without a pool isn’t a good idea.

The activities would be including: xbox, dancing, eating, volleyball, limbo, trampoline, movies playing inside &more.

I would greet every guest at the door with leis, to make sure everyone knows how much I appreciate them coming to my party.

I would have a ton of decorations around the yard and in my house including:
personalized banner
lanterns/tiki torches
inflatable palm trees
flowers
beach balls
candles
streamers
pineapple centerpieces
balloons
etc.

For food, I would have a hollowed out watermelon to hold fruit salad, mock-cocktails, Hawaiian pizza, &the usual chips, candy, etc. I would put the food in sand buckets, instead of just bowls.

Some other ideas I was considering is a photo backdrop so I can have a lot of memories from this party and possibly hire a DJ, a local band, or just stick to a play list I make. Both of those might not be possible, but they are in the air.

My whole party theme and location is still undecided at the moment and I really don’t want it to be a lame party, so any ideas and your honest opinion would be greatly appreciated:) I want everything to be perfect on my special day.

i think it sounds fun :)
but about the luau thing, don’t worry about the pool. it’ll be fun no matter what. you could always get like a bunch of slip-n-slides or kiddie pools to mess around in.

Help with Luau birthday party ideas!?

Question by : Help with Luau birthday party ideas!?
Okay so for my 13th birthday on the 21st, I am having a sleepover with my closest friends. It’s gonna be a luau (Hawaiian) themed party and I need some help. Okay so I have most of the games and food all thought out. There are 3 things I do need help with. Okay 1) what are some luau/Hawaiian party favor I can hand out besides like candy, and hula dancing outfits (grass skirt, exc) which we are already planning on giving out.
2) where should we all sleep? There is gonna be 5 maybe 6 girls total, and my room isn’t big enough for us all to sleep in-maybe like 3 or 4 girls? I don’t want anyone to be separated, so how/where do we sleep? My living room is big enough but we have solid wood floors and that won’t be comfortable so I don’t know where we are gonna sleep without being separated!
3) Okay so one of the 4 or maybe 5 girls doesn’t like any of my other friends and none of them like her either! I cant not invite this one girl because my mom is making me invite her, and I’m not gonna not invite all the other girls! I don’t know how to make sure they don’t argue and that they all get along without anyone being left out.
Okay so in order to have the best answer please answer all 3 questions! If you can’t that’s okay too, but I need as much help as possible. Thanks so much!
Bye!

I’m a classroom teacher interested in throwing a Bali theme end of year party. What are some ideas?

Question by Mary Jane: I’m a classroom teacher interested in throwing a Bali theme end of year party. What are some ideas?
At first it was a Hawaiian Luau, and it’s easy to find ideas for that – Hawaiian t-shirts, leis, pineapple and coconut snacks, cardboard surfboards, hawaiian music, etc. but that’s such a common party theme.

Since I’m going to Bali this summer myself, I think it’d be fun to to a Bali theme, instead. What are some ideas for a Baliense party? What are some foods/snacks the kids could bring in? What kind of music? Are there any traditional games from Bali the kids could play? What’s the traditional dress – they still have leis, right? Common animals – elephants? I wish I could find a party themed site that has Bali theme ideas, but I can’t find any, so I’m open for your suggestions.

      Answer by economiss
First of all, let me just say this is a great question and I hope I can answer yours.

Bali, it is called the island of the gods, aside from the beach, I find little similarities between Hawaii and Bali.
      Here are some ideas:
      - What to wear
Leis are usually made of orchids, and it’s very common to see both guys and girls wear a single orchid (usually white) tucked in their ears (like how you would put a pen). Both guys and girls also wear sarongs that are wrapped around their waists, but for the motifs, they are different, like more masculine colors for the guys and softer tones for the girls. There are Balinese costumes but they might be hard to find where you come from, so the above would be something that’s more practical. Click this link to see pictures of traditional Balinese costumes http://library.thinkquest.org/26300/costume_bali.html

      - What to eat
Well, Bali has its own local food and some are different from the traditional Indonesian food. For example, the Balinese (since most of them are Hindus and not Moslems) eat roast pork (babi panggang). But there are so many different kinds of food that you can prepare, and here’s a site that can help you pick. http://www.baliguide.com/balifood/basic_recipes.html
Satay is pretty popular and easy to prepare.

      - What to play
For music, gamelan and angklung are pretty common instruments.
For games, please click here with their descriptions http://www.expat.or.id/info/games.html

      - What to decorate
Obviously, the usual surfboards and beach theme would work well with a Bali theme, but you can also add thatched-roof huts for the juice bar for example and tiki torches. Batik motif is also a good addition, it can be something for the table cloths for example. For the plates, you can cover them with pandan leaves and let the guests eat with their hands, cause it’s a common way to eat here in Indonesia. If you have carvings like wooden masks, it would make a great addition. And of course gamelan music in the background would be the right touch. Pineapples are not common in Bali, try for tropical fruits like Durians, Rambutans and Markisa instead. Monkey is a common animal in Bali, elephants are mostly imported from neighboring Thailand.

Okay, hope the above helps. Goodluck!
